In January many of the members of the SRI community will gather in Atlanta for the annual Winter Meeting.  We hope that you will join us for this unique opportunity to learn with colleagues from around the country and the world.  This Winter Meeting will include familiar elements that are hallmarks of SRI events alongside new ways to learn from and with one another.

If you are an educator committed to educational equity and excellence, please join us for an exciting and invigorating three days!  We will deepen our understandings and insights about the relationship between Educational Equity and Critical Friendship, Facilitative Leadership, and Professional Community.

From January 12-14, 2012 we will come together to do essential, sustained, and focused work, with the goal of transforming our thinking and our practice so the schools we are affiliated with reflect our goal of educational equity. We will have the courageous conversations necessary to move talk into action, with the people whose wisdom, perspective and skill we need most.

We’ll use the tools and processes of critical friendship to deepen our skills, to press for insights, and to find courage in community. We’ll spend time in small groups of various configurations, looking at student and educator work, giving feedback on dilemmas, asking tough questions, and gathering multiple perspectives. During the Winter Meeting Experiences workshops, we will develop collective knowledge and think deeply about specific challenges, ideas, essential questions, and the work most important to each of us.

Please join us in Atlanta. Our collective learning will be richer because you are there.

Winter Meeting Program
What’s happening at the 2012 SRI Winter Meeting?

Poetry…

The Winter Meeting is a learning experience for adults associated with schools and schooling.  But our foundation, our motivation, our passion is for our students.  This year we hope to inspire your learning with a documentary called LOUDER THAN A BOMB.  LOUDER THAN A BOMB is a film about passion, competition, teamwork, and trust. It’s about the joy of being young, and the pain of growing up. It’s about speaking out, making noise, and finding your voice.

It also just happens to be about poetry.

Collaboration…

Among the deeply held beliefs embedded in our work is the notion that we educators, with a bit of time, space, skills, tools, and consistent focus on teaching and learning, can address the most challenging issues in our professional practice.  At the heart of Critical Friends Groups is belief in collaboration, inquiry, and an abiding commitment to supporting one another through careful listening, candid and skillful feedback, and meaningful discourse.  At the Winter Meeting participants will form Small Groups of 5 to 6 people who will spend close to 8 hours together looking at work, giving and receiving feedback and facilitating the use of protocols

Core Principles of Critical Friendship
This session will offer an introduction to SRI’s core principles and practices of critical friendship and facilitative leadership. If you are planning to attend the Winter Meeting but have not been through a CFG seminar and/or have not been a member of a CFG, please consider participating in this pre-conference.

Participants in this session will continue to meet in groups during the Winter Meeting, at which time they will deepen their understanding by using protocols to examine student work, by giving each other feedback on leadership and teaching dilemmas, and by considering how to implement their new learning in their respective work contexts.

Moving CFGs Online
Julie Moore, Associate Professor, Kennesaw State University
This session is for experienced facilitators who are interested in exploring the benefits, strategies and challenges of conducting CFGs in an online environment. While CFGs have traditionally been face-to-face communities, online environments offer great potential for supporting teachers who are geographically dispersed or who desire a learning community outside of their local building. Facilitating in such environments requires an expansion of skill sets beyond those of face-to-face facilitation. In this pre-session, participants will participate in online CFG sessions, discuss strategies for facilitating online CFGs, and share specific web-based sites and tools that can support CFG activities.
